After ovulation, progesterone dominates to prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy. In the absence of fertilisation, progesterone levels drop, triggering menstruation and sometimes premenstrual symptoms.

The cycle is mainly regulated by two key hormones: oestrogen and progesterone.

Irregular cycles
